HTC U11 EYES is official
As announced late last week, HTC unveiled today the U11 EYES, a mid-range premium smartphone with a dual webcam in the front, overlooking a large 6-inch Full HD screen.
HTC last week sent an invitation to a press conference to be held in Taiwan. The object of this press conference was the officialization of a new smartphone. A leak of Evan Blass claimed that the mobile would be called U11 EYEs, also known as the Ocean Harmony. The leaker was not wrong: HTC has decided to add an "S" at the end of the name, so directly related to its old model, the Desire EYE, while indicating that the mobile has several eyes!
Double webcam in the front
Because it is obviously the photographic aspect that HTC has decided to put forward in this smartphone that takes the positioning of the Desire EYE while modernizing the platform to bring it closer to the mid-range standards of this early 2018. The justification of the "S" is at the front of the camera: a double webcam to take selfies "beautiful". These are two 5 megapixel sensors with lenses opening at f / 2.2, autofocus, HDR compatibility and portrait mode. They can shoot in 1080p.
Chipset older than U11 Life
For the rest, if we were to summarize the positioning of the U11 EYES, this smartphone is between the U11 + for the format and the U11 Life for the platform. The latter is also not the same since HTC has not taken the Snapdragon 630, but he prefers the Snapdragon 652, a similar model, but less recent. And that has some consequences.
Hearts Cortex-A53 are slower, even if the Adreno (here 510) is a little more powerful. The Hexagon coprocessor is less successful (Hexagon V56) and the RAM slower (LPDDR3 933 MHz, against LPDDR4 1333 MHz). The integrated modem is also less complete: LTE category 6, WiFi ac dual band, Bluetooth 4.2. Too bad. And there is a significant risk that the support of updates is shorter.
The same Ultrapixel 3 as in the U11 +
There is, however, good news in this U11 EYES. The first is the main photo sensor: it's the same as that of the U11 +, the latest flagship of the Taiwan brand. It is a 12-megapixel Ultrapixel 3 with each pixel measuring 1.4 microns. It is paired with a dual-tone flash, optical stabilizer, phase-detecting autofocus and a very bright lens opening at f / 1.7. This sensor is capable of shooting at 1080p at 120 frames per second and 2160p at 30 frames per second.
The second good news is the battery: it's the same as the U11 +. Its capacity is 3930 mAh and is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0. Moreover, this identical capacity suggests that the dimensions of the two terminals are the same. And it's almost true: 0.6 mm difference in height, 0.1 mm difference in width and an identical thickness. The size of the screen is also equal: 6 inches in 18 / 9th format. Obviously, the nature of the slab and the definition of the screen are not the same: Super LCD 3 and Full HD + for the U11 EYES and Super LCD6 and Quad HD + for the U11 +.
Complete technical sheet
Like the HTC U11 Life, the U11 EYES benefits from 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, which is expandable thanks to a slot for a memory card (up to an additional 2 TB). The rest of the data sheet includes an NFC sensor, a GPS sensor (Glonass and Beidou), a USB type-C port, a 24-bit / 192kHz compatible audio coprocessor and Usonic, DLNA native support and a fingerprint reader. Digital on the back. There is no 3.5mm jack, as in all Ocean models.
Everything works with Android 8.0 Oreo (with HTC Sense) and is tidy in a premium aluminum chassis. Note that this shell is waterproof (IP67 certification) and Edge Sense compatible (side slices sensitive to pressure). It weighs 185 grams. It comes in black, blue and red. Its price is announced at 14 900 new Taiwanese dollars or 412 euros. It could be proposed around 500 euros in France. Its launch in Taiwan is scheduled for 9 February. No date yet for Europe.
