As every year back to school, Apple introduced in September 2016 the new version of its iPhone, numbered 7 despite a minimalist design change in comparison with the generation 6. Apple’s flagship brand, the best-selling smartphone each year, subject of all comparisons with the competition, produces as societal as technological, the iPhone offers with this new version a set of innovations, some being disruptive, some being simply evolutions of the previous proposal of its predecessor.
Ergonomics close to its predecessor
Ergonomically, the iPhone 7 offers a chassis and a grip very close to those of the iPhone 6S. We find a metal frame whose dimensions are very close (the thickness does not change, for example), for a weight that moves 5 grams down. The separations for the antennas are different. The telephone lines are reminiscent of those of his predecessor. At the rear, the photosensor, always in the same place, is now protected by the hull and no longer by a small reinforcement ring.
At the front, the screen still measures 4.7 inches for a definition of 750 x 1334 pixels, the same as the two previous generations. The resolution is the same: 336 pixels per inch. The backlight, always IPS LCD, is seen improving both terms of brightness and contrast. And on the edges, the proven disappearance of the 3.5 mm jack to connect headphones. However, inside the box are a headset with Lightning port and a 3.5mm jack Lightning adapter for those who do not want to give up their favorite audio accessory.
Touch ID compatible 3D Touch button
Under the screen, first real novelty: the new Touch ID button is no longer a mechanical button, but a 3D Touch compatible touchpad (with pressure sensor), like the touchscreen. It works with the haptic engine, to inform the user of taking into account an interaction, and always hides a fingerprint reader (to unlock the mobile and use Apple Pay). Another important detail on the audio side: the iPhone 7 is equipped with two speakers located at the top and bottom for stereo sound when the phone is held horizontally.
Behind the screen hides a new chipset: the A10 Fusion. This is a dual-core dual with custom hearts (very similar to Snapdragon 820 from Qualcomm). The first couple handles heavy tasks, while the second, energy efficient, takes care of light tasks. 2 GB of RAM is integrated, as well as a battery of 1960 mAh (against 1715 mAh on the iPhone 6S) compatible with a fast charging technology. More batteries, less consumption: the iPhone 7 would gain 2 hours of autonomy on average. The iPhone 7 has a category 9 LTE modem, WiFi ac dual band MiMo and Bluetooth 4.2. The smartphone is also compatible GPS (Glonass) and NFC.
Stabilized photosensor with the new lens
The photographic equipment has also changed. The sensor of the iPhone 6S is always present: iSight sensor 12 megapixels with Focus Pixels technology (autofocus with integrated phase detection sensor). It is now accompanied by an optical stabilizer (for photo and video), a brighter six-element lens and opening at f / 1.8 (like the Galaxy S7) and a true-tone quad-LED flash. The image processor has also evolved. In the front, the Facetime camera goes from 5 to 7 megapixels. Its goal remains the same since it opens at f / 2.2. On the other hand, the maximum definition of video capture with Facetime goes from 720p to 1080p.
The iPhone 7 comes with iOS 10. It is available in five colors: black (which looks a lot like sidereal gray), shiny black, silver, gold and rose gold. Three storage options are available: 32 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB. All levels of the iPhone 6S have been doubled. Always count 110 euros to go from one of them to the next.
